Senior health care has always been an issue of vital concern to the authorities as well as non-profit organizations.

While the developed nations have already been giving due attention to this sector, an increasing number of developing countries has also started developing special policies for the same.

What is the need?

Advanced medical care and healthy lifestyles have led to a substantial rise in the general life expectancy.

This in turn, has created an increasing need for devising effective plans for senior health care, which ought to be both, effective and economical.

Moreover, well-being of the elders of the society is crucial for any nation to progress in various fields. Senior health care is a sector that ensures that the elderly are well taken care of while the younger generation works hard for the nation’s development.

Areas of Concern

Many allied aspects of senior health care need to be dealt with. The most crucial aspect of this sector is the high amount of costs involved. There is a vast range of facilities and infrastructural requirements involved in setting up adequate centers for senior health care. Each of these facilities comes at a high cost.

Such facilities include medical expenses including medications, operative costs and non-conventional treatments, etc. Besides, dietary supplements are also available at a very high cost.

In addition, the lack of initiative on the behalf of governments of some nations is also a worrisome fact. This is especially true in the case of some developing countries or those who are in general lack of funds.

Lastly, another area of concern in the sector of senior health care is the social stigma attached to the issue. In many countries, it is still not regarded respectable to settle the elders in special care centers. Obviously, this has an impact on the general development of such facilities.

Steps to be taken

A number of steps can be taken to ensure that adequate senior health care plans are formulated. The most important step to be taken is to create awareness in the society about the significance of setting up good senior health care infrastructure.

Further, the administration has to provide adequate funds and facilities to those setting up infrastructure of senior health care. Provisions such as insurance schemes, post-retirement benefits and medical care plans should be given special incentives from the government.

Above all, the elders of the society need to be given sufficient respect in the society. This will make them feel secure enough to avail of such senior health care facilities, which will eventually lead to the development of better infrastructure for the purpose.
